Section outline

    • Inbreeding & Heterosis

Understanding the phenomena of inbreeding and heterosis is a fundamental component of the education of plant breeding students, as these processes explain a large part of the strategies used to develop varieties and hybrids with superior agronomic traits. The study of inbreeding helps us understand how homozygosity influences trait expression, genetic fixation, and inbreeding depression, while heterosis demonstrates the benefits derived from genetic recombination and the utilization of hybrid vigor.

This review workshop aims to reinforce the knowledge acquired during the course through activities such as analysis, problem-solving, critical discussion, and application to crops of regional importance, such as corn, cacao, rice, chococito, and papachina. In this way, the workshop promotes the integration of theoretical concepts with real-world situations in plant breeding, strengthening students’ ability to interpret biological phenomena, propose selection strategies, and justify technical decisions in breeding programs.

Furthermore, the workshop emphasizes critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and collaborative work, minimizing the memorization of isolated concepts and promoting the independent construction of knowledge. These skills are essential for future agronomy professionals, who will face challenges related to the productivity, adaptation, and sustainability of agricultural systems in various production contexts, particularly within the agroecological conditions of the Colombian Pacific region.

Abstract. The final review workshop on inbreeding and heterosis aims to reinforce and consolidate the knowledge acquired in the Plant Breeding course through conceptual analysis, problem-solving exercises, critical discussion, and the application of genetic principles to crops of regional agricultural importance. Students will work in groups to interpret case studies, calculate indicators associated with heterosis, debate the advantages and limitations of inbreeding, and propose genetic improvement strategies tailored to different species. The activity promotes critical thinking, collaborative work, and the application of theoretical concepts to real-world situations in plant breeding.

    • Instructivo.
